5 Significant Ways Android Is Better Than iPhone OS

Posted by James Thompson on 27 Jan 2012 / 0 Comment

Android is a revolutionary operating system (OS) for mobile devices that was created by Android Inc. in 2003. The company was purchased by Google Inc. in 2005 that developed an Open Handset Alliance. This alliance worked on the Android Open Source Project to develop open standards for mobile phones. The first Android powered cell phone was debuted in 2008 in the mobile device called HTC Dream. It was dubbed as the strongest competition for Apple’s iPhone.

Android OS – Linux-Based Kernel

For those of you who are unaware, Android was built on the Linux-based Kernel version 2.6. The Open Handset Alliance setup by Google Inc revealed their first product that was open source similar to Linux OS.

But the thing that most people don’t really know is why and how are Android-enabled mobile devices different from Apple’s iPhone. Following are the 5 salient features that make Android a better option for Smartphone users and gives an edge over iPhone:

1. Simultaneous App Operation

Since the very beginning from Version 1.0, Android has the ability to run various applications simultaneously irrespective of what apps they are. Even though the present series of iPhone OS provide some multitasking, it is restricted to running local applications like Mail, iPod and Phone to operate in the backdrop. But what happens in the case of Android is that the users can receive notifications, hear music, or open their GPS at the same time.

2. Superior App Market

Now we know that Apple’s App Store contains in excess of 180,000 applications whilst the Android App Marketplace is round about 50,000. But considering the fact that Android has grown its App market in such a rapid time, it goes to show how quickly it will surpass Apple’s marketplace to become the leader in mobile Apps. Secondly, Android provides an entirely open market. Android is driven by customers who can create and submit various games and other mobiles Apps unlike Apple Inc.

3. Better Voice Command Function

Even though Steve Wozniak was the co-founder of Apple Inc. he openly praised the voice commands feature of Androids. As compared to the iPhone OS, Steve said that the voice commands function in Android is far superior to Apple iPhone OS as they yield better results.

4. Compatible across Various Handsets

The worst thing about iPhone OS is that it is only compatible with Apple Smartphone. The only choices that Apple users can make as regards to the mobile device are color, memory size and processor speed. Since Android is an open-source platform, it is compatible across all different handsets of various manufacturers.

5. Open Source

Now for the best part that all web developers love to hear. Android OS platform is an open source operating system running on the Linux Kernel. That means that developers and manufactures have the liberty of working on Android’s software and improvement in order to create better Apps. We couldn’t possibly imagine an iPhone OS being open source in the near future.
